Growth Characteristics of Five Plum Varieties on Six Different Rootstocks Grown in Containers at Different Irrigation Levels

In contrast to other European countries, the nurseries in Hungary mainly use Myrobalan seedlings as rootstock for plum trees; no experience with rootstocks is available yet. The aim of our research was gather and recommend growers that are adapted climatic conditions can be used high-density intensive orchards. experiment, six (Myrobalan seedlings, ‘St. Julien GF655/2’, A’, ‘Fereley’, ‘Wangenheim’ ‘WaVit’) five varieties (‘Topper’, ‘Toptaste’, ‘Topfive’, ‘?a?anska lepotica’ ‘Jojo’) were tested. experimental plantation established Kecskemét, lowland region Hungary, which characterised by low humus content dry conditions. trees received two different irrigation doses from 2012 onwards, one each half (six trees) a combination. first dose 2 L second 4 per hour. Trees highest trunk cross-sectional area (TCSA) canopy volume ‘Topper’, ‘Toptaste’ ‘Topfive’ on ‘Fereley’ rootstock, but this showed lower survival, only 33–50% surviving 2× irrigation. average TCSA values ‘WaVit’ resulted too poor growth. contrast, seedling (Sdlg) GF655/2’ provided strong growth based data. results analysis shoot did not significantly affect length, except ‘Jojo’. developed fruit typical cultivars after fruiting, little influence rootstocks. ‘Topper’ dominated bunched shoots, while short shoots proportion long shoots.
